Top tips when cooking with almond milk

Today more people than ever are turning to milk alternatives, and there are plenty of reasons why. Lactose intolerance, allergies, veganism, environmental concerns are just a few.

Out of all the milk alternatives out there (and there are a lot!), almond milk is one of the most popular* and now more and more people are using almond milk in their kitchens for a variety of recipes. We’re not just talking about new age foods either, but also classic favourites you know and love with one small (almond) switch.

It’s really easy to make that switch too. If you’re interested, just follow our top tips when cooking with almond milk.

Make some simple swaps

Pretty much any of your favourite dishes will work beautifully by just substituting dairy milk with almond milk, meaning there’s no need to cut out that creamy custard or rich pasta sauce you love.

Decide which flavour is right for your dish

Just like dairy milk, almond milk has lots of different varieties offering small taste variations and health benefits.

To get you started, take a look at our Almond Breeze® Original, Almond Breeze® Unsweetened and Almond Breeze® Barista Blend. Whichever one you pick, you’ll enjoy a light, creamy and nutty flavour that comes from the almonds we’ve been growing and nurturing in our California orchards. The only difference is that Original is slightly sweeter than Unsweetened (as it has no sugars). The choice is usually more down to health preferences.

Be careful when heating

Like dairy milk, almond milk will score if cooked at too high a temperature (you’ll know because it will form a skin when boiling). You can avoid this by simply setting your hob to a medium-low heat and letting the almond milk heat gradually – the almond aromas released are lovely!

For best results, be sure to stir your almond milk constantly when heating. You’ll know when the almond milk is ready because it will be slightly steaming and hot to touch.

Don’t freeze almond milk

Freezing almond milk causes the product to separate. When thawed, it won’t look very nice and it messes with the consistency so avoid doing it. Fortunately, our Almond Breeze® has a long shelf life so, as long as your carton is left unopened, it has no need to be frozen.
